I find the National Geographic blogs very good resources for adventure travel-related topics. They are usually a nice blend of first-hand reporting, articles repurposed from one of the magazines, or interesting lists about the “ten best” of something or other. Lists are helpful, but within the context of websites, a list’s true purpose is to drive web traffic based on the keywords and hyperlinks. But that’s all backend stuff; for readers a good list shines a light on something you might have remained in the dark about.
So when I saw Food Fridays: World’s Best Pâtisseries, a recent post on National Geographic’s Intelligent Travel blog, my curiosity was piqued. Who wouldn’t want some insider information to tuck away for the next trip to France? I don’t know how widely this list will circulate through France, or the rest of Europe for that matter, but if it does, it is bound to draw some criticism. Of the ten featured pâtisseries, only four of them are in France! Of the remaning six, one is in Italy and the rest are in the United States.
Now, to be fair, I assume the list has something to do with the fact that this is a blog with a North American readership. But I find it hard to believe that there aren’t many exceptional pâtisseries in Canada. And while the selections in Minnesota and California are doubtless fine establishments, it is hard to imagine someone planning a trip around them. I would love to read a list of off-the-radar pâtisseries across France, and other countries (including the United States and Canada), but this particular list just seems to miss the mark.
For those of you still reading, I will share with you my favorite local place for French baked delicacies. Cannelle Pâtisserie is no big secret, you just have to be willing to head to Queens!
