London Gatwick Airport is 32 miles from the centre of London, 25 miles from London Heathrow Airport and less than 1 mile from Junction 9 of the M23 in Crawley West Sussex (originally Charlwood Surrey) 3 miles (5 Km) north of the Town Centre
London Gatwick Airport is London’s second largest airport and the UK’s second busiest airport after London Heathrow Airport, it is also the World’s 25th busiest airport and in Europes top 10 in terms of passengers per annum. London Gatwick has two terminals, North and South but only one runway. London Gatwick is a major hub for scheduled services, with over 80 different airlines operating and serving around 200 destinations around the world. Over 800 plane movements are handled by the airport on a busy summers day. BAA own and operated London Gatwick along with six other airports including London Heathrow. The airport was officially opened by HRH Queen Elizabeth II on 9th June 1958 and in 2008 celebrated its 50 years of operation, and as Charter Airlines do not operate from London Heathrow they use LOndon Gatwick as their main base for London and the South East.
Due to flight restrictions to and from the USA that were enshrined in the 1977 Bermuda II bilateral air services agreement between the UK and US Gatwick has seen many more flights over the past 30 years.
British Airways, easyjet and Virgin Atlantic use the airport as a major operational base along with charter airlines including, First Choice Airways, Thomas Cook Airlines and Thomsonfly.
London Gatwick Airport has excelent access from its dedicated motorway spur road at Junction 9A of the M23, which links with the main M23 motorway at Junction 9. The M23 connects with London’s orbital motorway, the M25 at Junction 7, 9 miles (14 Km) north of the airport and giving good access to Greater London and the South East.
The airport has its own mainline railway station next to the South Terminal on the Brighton to London Victoria and London Bridge Terminus Stations, as well as Brighton and Worthing to the South. THe Gatwick Express connects London Victoria to London Gatwick Airport. Several other companies use the airport station including, Southern, First Capital Connect, CrossCountry and First Great Western, with First Capital Connect providing direct trains to and from London Luton Airport and Bedford and Southern running direct services between Watford Junction and Brighton.
National Express Coaches operate services from London Gatwick to London Heathrow and London Stansted Airports as well as cities and towns throughout the district, with its sister company NationExpress Dot2Dot operating on demand responsive minibus service to any location in a defined area of central London. Other operators include The Oxford Bus Company operating direct services to Oxford, easybus minicoaches to Gatwick from London Victoria Coach Station.
Direct local bus services operated by Metrobus and Fastway connect the North and South terminals with the following towns, Crawley, Horley, Redhill and Horsham.
A FREE to use transit system consisting of three car automatic driverless vehicles running on a 3/4 mile elevated two way track connects the North and South Terminals in about 2 minutes and runs every three minutes in peak travel and every six minutes at all other times.
